Asbestos in hair dryers

Asbestos has been introduced into various goods used by the public. One example is the hand held hair drier, which has been described as a “small asbestos spray gun”. Without knowing there can be asbestos in hair dryers, most people have used a hair dryer, at least once or twice.

Asbestos in hair dryers was used as heat resistant support and also to prevent fire hazards, by providing protection should the elements over-heat or spark and catch fire. If you used a hair dryer produced before 1980, you could have been exposed to asbestos because most handheld hair dryers that were manufactured before 1980 contain asbestos.
If you still have one of those vintage hair dryers, you should throw it out and invest in a new one.

List of hair dryers known to contain asbestos

In 1979 a number of hair dryers was recalled from the market in the US. Most of those models where produced all over the world. The following is a list of hair dryers recalled. If you still have one of those, and still use it, you should stop using it. Note that this list is not complete, there may well be other older models from other producers containing asbestos. And it is not safe to assume that hair dryers produced in nations without asbestos bans do not contain asbestos.

Salon hood dryers

Asbestos was also used in salon hood dryers. Most of these types of hairdryer were not made in the Far East , but were actually manufactured in the UK, Germany and the Netherlands.
Salon hood-style hairdryers which are thought to contain asbestos include the following
manufacturers; La Reine, Suter, Wella, Kadus, Carmen, Indola, Eugene, Salon Nelson and some less common models include those manufactured by Muholus, Schwartzkopf, Kerka and
Turbinator. Other models of asbestos containing hairdryers may also exist as it was common
practice.
